Getting Started
From OrbEdit Wiki
Check Minimum Requirements
Before beginning, double-check that you meet the minimum requirements for running Orb. To have a good time with Orb, you should have at least:
- Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista
- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
- Pentium 4 1.8GHz+ or AMD 2200xp+
- 512M RAM
- 200 MB of free disk space
- 3D-capable video card with 32 MB of VRAM or greater
If you don't have the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or above, the Orb installer will automatically install it for you. To manually check your version, you can take the following steps:
- Open your control panel and select Add or Remove Programs
- Look though the list of installed programs for .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5. If you can't find it, you can get it from Microsoft here.
- Chances are good that if you have updated Windows recently, this will already be installed.
Download and Install
You can get the latest version of Orb from the downloads page. Save the installer to your hard drive and then double-click it to begin the install process.
We went to great lengths to make the Orb installation process as unobtrusive as we could. During installation, you will be asked for the location to install Orb. This data is saved in your registry so that when you update Orb, there is no need to re-select this options. Additionally, a file association is made in your registry between .olay, .olvl, and .oprj and OrbEdit. This means that when you double-click any of those file types, they will be automatically opened with OrbEdit.
If you should choose to uninstall Orb, these 2 registry entries will be removed, along with all Orb files the installer copied to your system, except the Projects directory. This directory contains all your creative game-making work, scripts, and assets and would be a shame to lose!
Running OrbEdit
Phew, that wasn't too bad. Starting OrbEdit is even easier, it can be done from your Start Menu or directly from OrbEdit.exe in your installation directory.
The first time you start OrbEdit, you will see a short welcome screen, directing you back to this wiki and to the tutorial maps that come included with Orb. The tutorials are a great place to get started and are detailed even further in the Tutorials section. There is still a lot to learn about Orb before you can begin making games!
